6 Palestinian Films You Need to See

Want to understand Palestine beyond the news cycle? Start with its cinema. Palestinian directors have won at Cannes, Berlin and the Oscars, and their films capture occupation, exile and everyday life in a way no headline can.

Here are six films worth adding to your watchlist. Most can be streamed or rented in the US.

No Other Land (2024)

Created by a Palestinian-Israeli collective including Basel Adra and Yuval Abraham, this documentary follows home demolitions in Masafer Yatta in the occupied West Bank. It won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in 2025.

Omar (2013) and Paradise Now (2005)

Both from director Hany Abu-Assad and both Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, these dramas dig into the impossible choices young Palestinians face. Paradise Now also took home a Golden Globe.

5 Broken Cameras (2011)

Farmer Emad Burnat filmed five years of weekly protests in his village, Bil'in, and lost a camera each time one was destroyed. Co-directed with Guy Davidi, it earned an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary.

Wajib (2017) and Farha (2021)

Annemarie Jacir's Wajib follows a father and son hand-delivering wedding invitations around Nazareth, and it's as funny as it is moving. Darin J. Sallam's Farha tells the story of a girl hiding during the 1948 Nakba and drew worldwide attention when it hit streaming.

Host a movie night and talk about what you watched afterward. It's one of the easiest ways to keep Palestinian stories in the conversation. Want more? Read about Handala and what he represents.
