Palestine's National Football Team: A Short History
Soccer gives Palestine something rare: a team that competes on the international stage under its own flag. The history of the Palestinian national team is a story of persistence in the face of real obstacles.
The beginnings
Soccer in Palestine dates back to the British Mandate, when a national football association was created in 1928. The modern Palestinian Football Association was formed again in 1962, and FIFA admitted it as a member in 1998.
A first home match
For a long time the team had to play its home games in other countries. In October 2008 it finally played an international match at home, at the Faisal Al-Husseini Stadium in al-Ram near Jerusalem.
Obstacles off the field
Travel restrictions between Gaza and the West Bank and at international borders have often made it hard for players to train and play together. The squad also draws on players from the diaspora, including many who grew up in Latin America and the Middle East.
Progress in Asia
Palestine reached the AFC Asian Cup for the first time in 2015 and again in 2019. At the 2023 edition, held in early 2024, the team advanced to the knockout round for the first time, a result celebrated by Palestinians worldwide.
Palestino: a club built by immigrants
In Santiago, Chile, Palestinian immigrants founded Club Deportivo Palestino in 1920. The club plays in Chile's top league, and its fans proudly wear red, green, black and white, showing how far Palestinian communities have traveled.
