UK Recognises Palestinian State: A Step Toward Justice, Not Just Diplomacy

After decades of occupation, dispossession, and broken promises, the United Kingdom has officially recognised the State of Palestine—a long overdue but vital move in the struggle for justice.
In a public statement, Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared the decision as a necessary response to the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, calling it a way to preserve the possibility of peace and a two-state solution. The announcement was made alongside similar recognitions by Australia and Canada, with France and Portugal expected to follow soon.
But for Palestinians and their allies around the world, this move is more than symbolism. It’s an acknowledgment of existence, identity, and rights that have been denied for generations.
Recognition After Genocide
The UK’s recognition comes amid a devastating chapter in Gaza’s history. More than 65,000 Palestinians have been killed, and the infrastructure of an entire society has been reduced to rubble by a relentless Israeli assault that the UN has now called genocide.
Children are starving. Hospitals have been bombed. Entire families have been wiped from the civil registry.
This is not a diplomatic crisis. It is a moral one.
Recognition of Palestinian statehood is a minimal act of global decency, not a reward, as Israel and its allies claim. It is a declaration that Palestinian lives, land, and liberation matter.
Israel’s Fury: When Recognition Threatens Oppression
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the decision, warning that “a Palestinian state will not happen.” He accused the UK and others of “rewarding terrorism.”
But it is not Palestinians who are building illegal settlements. It is not Palestinians who are blocking aid to starving civilians. And it is not Palestinians who have the fourth-largest military in the world occupying land that does not belong to them.
The real threat to peace is not recognition—it is continued Israeli impunity.
Hamas ≠ Palestine
Starmer clearly stated the UK’s recognition is not an endorsement of Hamas, a group that has already been proscribed in the UK. He emphasised that Hamas has no role in the future of Palestinian governance.
What this recognition affirms is that the Palestinian people are not defined by resistance groups, but by their right to self-determination, return, and dignity.
The People Who Need to Be Heard
Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, welcomed the decision, calling it a “foundation for peace between Palestine and Israel.” But perhaps more powerfully, Palestinian voices on the ground reminded the world that this is not about borders—it’s about being seen.
Mohammed Jarrar, mayor of Jenin, told the BBC:
“This recognition confirms that the Palestinian people possess a state—even if it is under occupation.”
Meanwhile, Husam Zomlot, Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, said:
“This is not a gift. This is an inalienable right. Recognition is the end of denial.”
From Gaza to the West Bank: A Brutal Reality
Israel’s illegal settlements in the West Bank continue to expand. Far-right ministers within the Israeli government, such as Itamar Ben Gvir, are openly calling for the annexation of the West Bank and the elimination of the Palestinian Authority.
Netanyahu confirmed these intentions, boasting that “Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria has doubled” and promising “we will continue.”
These policies are not security measures—they are tools of ethnic cleansing and colonisation.
Recognition Is a First Step—Not the Final One
While recognition alone won’t stop the siege or rebuild Gaza, it shatters the lie that Palestine must wait to “earn” its statehood. No people should need permission to exist.
The UK’s recognition is a clear message that the era of total Israeli impunity must come to an end.
It must now be followed by:
-
An immediate and permanent ceasefire
-
An end to the blockade of Gaza
-
International sanctions against Israeli war crimes
-
Support for Palestinian self-determination and return
This Is What Solidarity Looks Like
Yes, recognition is political. But it is also deeply human. It is a message to every Palestinian child in Rafah, every refugee in Lebanon, every prisoner in Israeli jails:
You are not forgotten. Your state exists. Your people are not alone.
The Struggle Isn’t Over. But Today, the World Moved.
As the UK finally acknowledges Palestinian statehood, let it be more than words. Let it be the beginning of a global shift—one that chooses justice over diplomacy, truth over comfort, and freedom over fear.
