The History of Gaza: From Ancient Port to Today

For many Americans, Gaza is a place they only know from the evening news. But Gaza is also one of the oldest cities on Earth, a Mediterranean port that has been lived in for thousands of years.

At the crossroads of empires

Gaza grew up where trade routes from Egypt, Arabia and the Levant reached the sea. Caravans brought incense and spices through its gates, and whoever controlled Gaza controlled a key piece of that trade. Alexander the Great laid siege to the city in 332 BC, and over the centuries it was ruled by Egyptians, Romans, Byzantines, Islamic caliphates, the Mamluks and the Ottomans.

Landmarks with deep roots

The Great Omari Mosque, Gaza's best-known historic mosque, stands on a site that was once a temple and later a church. The Church of Saint Porphyrius dates back to the fifth century and is considered one of the oldest active churches in the region. The Pasha's Palace, built in the Mamluk era, reportedly hosted Napoleon in 1799. Many of these sites were reported severely damaged during the war that began in 2023.

People, not just places

Gaza's story is also one of fishermen, farmers, weavers and merchants, and of the refugee families who arrived after 1948 and built new lives there. Palestinian Americans from Gaza often describe the beach, the markets and the smell of fresh bread as the things they miss most.

Remembering Gaza as a living city is part of standing with its people. Our I Love Gaza and Palestine Map designs are a simple way to carry that with you.
